Walk with Joe

A few weeks ago, we had the chance to walk with forest ecologist Joe Wright up to the 50 hectare plot on BCI. He is a veritable encyclopedia of plant taxonomy and BCI history. Fascinating stories there and back. His dossier is as wide as it is deep, but he started by studying birds. He found that he spent as much time looking at the foliage they were hiding behind and his curiosity shifted. The work that Joe has done at STRI has changed the way scientists look at the forest, and is informing us about the global impact things like carbon have on the forest. He says that each year, there are 2-3% more flowers on trees here…over many years because of the increased carbon in the atmosphere. It’s all a giant web.
